I’ve been exclusively using NameSilo to register new domain names for the past 7 years. They have always offered the cheapest pricing for both registering and renewing domain names. And best of all, their pricing never changes (unless it’s forced by ICANN or a registry).
Unlike most other domain registrars, NameSilo only offers domain registration. You never have to worry about them trying to upsell web hosting, SEO services, or anything else like that.
NameSilo is one of those companies that simply has too many awesome features and perks to mention in one post. So, I’m going to try to condense all of the features I love to an organized list. If you want more details on a specific feature, just shoot them an email or create a free account.
Let’s take a quick look at some of the features offered by NameSilo:
Cheap Domains – NameSilo consistently has the cheapest pricing for domain names. Other registrars will run special offers on some days, but those offers still don’t beat NameSilo’s normal pricing most of the time. Also, NameSilo is very transparent with their renewal pricing. Always be wary of registrars that offer super cheap registration and then significantly more to renew.
Free Private WHOIS – All domains registered with NameSilo come with free WHOIS privacy. This is a big deal! Most registrars charged around $5-$10 per year for this. Also, unlike some other registrars, their privacy feature also applies to domain renewals – forever.
Discount Program – Don’t worry, this isn’t your average domain discount program. It’s actually completely free and you get discounts based upon the total number of domains in your account. At the time of writing this post, the highest tier receives .com’s for $6.39/year.
DNS Templates – NameSilo has a large collection of DNS Templates that you can activate for a domain. For example, if you want your domain to use Google Apps, Blogger, Shopify, etc – it’s as easy as clicking a button and their system will automatically make all of the complicated DNS changes for you. This is a big deal for anyone not familiar with DNS.
Domain Marketplace – This is one of the few features I’ve never used, but they do give you the option to both buy and sell domain names in their marketplace. I rarely sell domains, I just let them expire when I’m done. But it would be financially beneficial to try selling a domain a month or so before it expires if you aren’t planning on using it.
Domain Redirects – NameSilo gives you the option to forward your domain and/or subdomains to any other website or web page you want. This is offered completely free – don’t worry about needing to pay more for any of the features on this list.
Email Forwarding – Don’t want to host your domain’s email anywhere and just want it forwarded to another email address? With NameSilo, you can forward your emails anywhere you want to. You can forward individual emails and you can setup a catchall to forward all emails sent to your domain to a specific email address.
Automated Transfers – NameSilo’s system for transferring domains in and out of their registrar is fully automated. You don’t have to wait days to receive an EPP code. If you want to move a domain to them, you can have it done by the end of the day.
Prepaid Funds – With their Account Funds Manager, you can deposit funds directly into NameSilo and automatically replenish those funds when they drop below your specified threshold. This is a great for domainers and web hosting companies that use NameSilo.
Domain Defender – This is just the fancy name their 2-factor authentication feature. Your domain name is the most valuable online asset you have. If you’re using a domain registrar that doesn’t offer 2-factor authentication, you should leave it immediately. Even if you don’t choose to start using NameSilo like I recommend, leave that registrar and go to anyone else.
Reseller Manager – This is one of the coolest features offered to domain resellers (such as web hosts). You can specify your company’s name, email, logo, custom WHOIS messages, and more. This helps prevent your customers from realizing that you’re using NameSilo to resell domains.
Affiliate Program – NameSilo’s affiliate program will pay you 10% commission for the first purchase made by any new customer you refer. I actually use their affiliate program to refer people in this post – but don’t worry, it doesn’t increase your cost at all.
Sub-Accounts – If you’re a large company, you may have a need to use NameSilo’s sub-accounts feature. This will allow you to create multiple accounts with access to a limited amount of features (that you get to choose) and you can remove them instantly at any time.
API System – 99% of people will never use NameSilo’s API system, but if you’re a developer or web hosting company that needs to register domains, I would definitely recommend doing it here. Nothing can beat using a registrar with stable pricing.
Customer Support – I normally make a big deal about the customer support offered by a company and you’ll notice that’s missing from this review. In all my years of using NameSilo, I’ve never actually had to contact them about anything – ever. Their control panel and system is just that easy to figure out. But if you do need to talk to them, they offer email and chat support.
NameSilo is an awesome company – plain and simple.
The don’t provide a ton of services because they’re solely focused on domain registration. But in my opinion, that’s what makes them a great company. I’m sure they sacrifice a lot of revenue by not upselling people to other services, but it’s worth it.
I left the domain registrar that I was with before them because I was constantly getting bombarded with marketing emails and people trying to upsell me to products like web hosting, SSLs, and other products. It wasn’t a bad registrar, I’d just prefer to use someone like NameSilo that is 100% focused on being a domain registrar.
